At Puratos Fourayes, we are deeply committed to nurturing the health of our soil. Our dedication to sustainable farming practices drives us to continuously explore innovative methods to improve soil quality. Here’s a glimpse into the exciting trials and monitoring activities we are currently undertaking to enhance our soil health.
Soil health is closely linked to the presence and activity of earthworms. At Puratos Fourayes, we regularly monitor worm activity and casting as indicators of soil health. Here’s how we do it:
· Worm Counts: We conduct periodic worm counts in different fields to assess the population density of earthworms. A higher number of worms typically indicates healthier soil.
· Casting: Earthworm castings are rich in nutrients and beneficial microbes. We visually check every orchard; if we see a good amount under each tree, we know the soil is healthy.
· Soil Moisture and Temperature Monitoring: By keeping track of soil moisture and temperature, we ensure optimal conditions for earthworm activity and overall soil health.
In the images on the right, you can see penny earthworms and organic matter debris. Below the worms, you can see the soil microbes which earthworms eat and then purge out, giving us an indication of soil health.
We are conducting several trials aimed at boosting soil fertility and structure by monitoring fungi and bacteria counts. These microorganisms are essential to many ecosystem processes. Some types of fungi and bacteria can break down wood from our prunings and fallen apples, returning nutrients to the soil. Others can fix nitrogen in the soil and help the trees absorb nutrients.
In the photograph on the right, you can see some of the fungi which help to contribute to healthy soil on the Puratos Fourayes farm.
Healthy soil is the foundation of productive and sustainable agriculture. It supports plant growth, enhances water infiltration, and reduces the need for chemical inputs. By focusing on soil health, we are not only improving crop yields but also contributing to the long-term sustainability of our farming practices.
At Puratos Fourayes, we believe that investing in soil health is investing in our future. We are excited to continue our journey towards more sustainable and resilient farming practices, and we look forward to sharing our progress with you.
